kae Miller is a textile doll artist. Curating one of a kind Blythe, and Paperclay Dolls.
“I started out with some air dry clay, tin-foil, and some old hanging wire from my grandpas Junk-Drawer. I had no idea it would turn into what it did.”
“The journey itself took me down labyrinths of my childhood and things i had thought I’d forgotten. It started out with seeing these art dolls on instagram, I was stunned, truly. At first it was more of my inner textile artist coming out, but the more i began to develop my love for dolls it really took me back to when i was young and used to make bedroom sets and minatures for my american girl dolls. I always loved customizing dolls. The american girl dolls were only cool when i saw them Customized With these sort of alternative, grungy outfits that were fun and unique. I wanted to create that world myself and i remember what a big part of my life that was and now it’s like i re-discovered it.
I think my younger self would freak out if she saw what I am doing now and i think that is truly the epitome of the inner child journey.”
“Doll making is more than just curating a doll. It is weird to think about but it is like each one tells me it’s story. Sometimes they are parts of myself, and sometimes i feel i’m perhaps channeling a story that wants to be told. I think the fun part is i get to express my multiple aesthetics into several dolls. One can be totally dark and gothic, and the other could be pink and whimsy. I used to be picked on in high-school for having multiple styles which I find to be funny because Truly i think inside every artist is multiple characters and stories of expression. And that is why i think i picked whimsy for my name because each doll is whimsy in its own way, whether they’re mismatched, dis-proportionate, have some wear and tear, it is all beautiful to me. There is no box that will confine them.
They are Whimsy.”
